Merchandiser job description

Merchandisers work in the retail sector ensuring the right stock is bought and delivered to the right stores in the right quantities. They work with buyers to make accurate stock predictions and thereby forecast periods of high or low demand. While there is sometimes a separation between buyers and merchandiser in larger chains, smaller companies sandwich the two roles together. Traditionally, though, the merchandiser sets the quantity and maximum price the company is willing to pay for stock, while the buyer goes ahead and secures it from manufacturers.

What is a merchandiser's salary?

For junior merchandisers, salary ranges from £18-20k based on experience. Those who rise to senior merchandiser positions can command much, much more, at a range of £45-65k, and directors are often found earning £85k+ with benefits. There is no degree necessary to enter into a career as a merchandiser; although, having a qualification in any kind of business subject would be of benefit. Strong arithmetic and organisation skills are necessary, though, and since it is a competitive field, some kind of retail or office experience will be vital to securing a job in an entry level position.
